J. Tillman, the most famous former Fleet Fox, was responsible for two truly spectacular 2009 releases – Year in the Kingdom and Vacilando Territory Blues. Both albums were filled with stark, minimalist folk songs that only sparingly used full band arrangements. It wasn’t long after that Tillman got a day job, drumming for Fleet Foxes during their incredibly successful run over the past 4 years. Now that he’s left that gig behind, Tillman will most likely turn the focus back on his solo career. Recording as Father John Misty, Tillman will drop his Sub Pop debut, Fear Fun, in May. Of his current lyrical state of mind, Tillman says, “I see a lot of rampant, sexless, male-fantasy everywhere in the music around me. I didn’t want any alter-egos, any vagaries, fantasy, escapism, any over-wrought sentimentality. I like humor and sex and mischief.” Also he’s still writing about death, as evident in first single “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings”. With its huge drum sound and crackin’ electric guitars, the song marks quite a sonic shift for Tillman as well.
